Onconephrology Fellowship
At MD Anderson Cancer Center

Why MD Anderson is the Premier Destination for Onco-Nephrology Training?
If you want to master the field of Onco-Nephrology, MD Anderson is undoubtedly one of the best places to train. Here, you’ll encounter patients with cancer—not just the common types but also rare and complex malignancies. As the largest cancer center in the world, we provide unparalleled exposure to the entire spectrum of Onco-Nephrology, including rare and atypical presentations.

Immersive, Inpatient-Focused Training
Your training will primarily revolve around inpatient care. While this can be more demanding than an outpatient-based experience, it is also far more rewarding in terms of learning opportunities. Inpatient care offers immediate and rich feedback, enabling you to sharpen your diagnostic skills and clinical judgment. You will have the chance to witness the broad repertoire of kidney-related complications in cancer patients.
MD Anderson provides a unique opportunity to refine your differential diagnosis skills and to test and implement various treatment strategies, learning in real time what works. The process is akin to the “10,000 hours” principle of achieving mastery, with the critical addition of consistent feedback to augment your expertise. Throughout this journey, you will be guided by attending physicians, some of whom have been leaders in Onco-Nephrology for over a decade.

Mastering the Language of Oncology
One of the most valuable aspects of training at MD Anderson is the opportunity to learn the language of oncologists. They often use specialized jargon and shorthand, which can initially seem foreign. You'll gradually become fluent in this terminology by systematically looking up every cancer type, chemotherapy acronym, and targeted therapy protocol. This fluency will enhance your ability to collaborate with oncologists and improve your communication with patients, empowering you to explain their conditions and treatments more effectively.
As an Onco-Nephrologist, you will gain cross-disciplinary knowledge that will enable you to recognize and recall key oncology regimens plus their nephrotoxicities, making you an indispensable part of the care team.
Expanding Your Horizons Through External Rotations and Research
Your training will be further enriched by rotations with the myeloma, melanoma, and urology services. Additionally, you will have the flexibility to tailor your own learning by shadowing other cancer specialties, as previous Onco-Nephrology fellows have done. Didactic conferences, designed to challenge and stimulate your intellect, will offer case-based learning and deep dives into pathophysiology.
Moreover, you’ll have protected time to engage in clinical or basic research. With countless unanswered questions and hypotheses to explore, you will have the potential to contribute to the growing body of knowledge in Onco-Nephrology.
An MD Anderson Onco-Nephrology fellowship certificate will signify your proficiency and open doors to academic and professional opportunities worldwide.
