As the number of patients needing kidney transplants continues to increase, there will be more patients who present with a prior history of cancer. Cancer is the third most common cause of death after kidney transplant so we must ensure our patients are safe for transplant.  We will review the data and answer the question of which patients should be offered a life saving kidney transplant and why.

Learning objectives:

  • How to screen any patent for pre-existing cancer as a standard part of the kidney transplant evaluation
  • Which cancers should be considered as a contraindication for future kidney transplant
  • Which cancers recur and which have an increased risk due to the transplant itself.
